Six local wrestlers grab state championships

HUNTSVILLE — Vestavia Hills, Arab and Leeds swept the team titles at the 61st annual AHSAA State Wrestling Championships Saturday at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center.
Fultondale’s Macon Edwards (106 pounds) and Timothy Murphree (120) captured Class 1A-5A individual championships. From Mortimer Jordan, Braxton Worthington (138) and 160-pound Bragan Swindle came home with state championships.

Blue Devils’ sophomore Carial Tarter fell in the 145-pound finals to Deshler’s Tyler Williams. Hayden’s Chase Phillips lost to Moody’s Michael Land in the 126-pound finals.
With the Saturday win, Edwards closed out a 90-0 season with his first state title. He now ranks second nationally for wins in a single season according to the NFHS record book and is the first AHSAA wrestler to win 90 matches in a single season.

In Class 6A action, Pinson Valley’s Cameron Hamby (120) and Gardendale’s Andrew Freeman (195) finished the year with top finishes in their respective weight classes. Hamby (39-7) beat Seth Hyatt of Arab in the championship match. Freeman (53-2) took a 3-2 decision over Arab’s Dawson Mcdaniel in the 195-pound finals.
