ROUNDUP: Trio of podium pole vaulters pace area in state tune-up; Jones stays hot for Sewanee

Three local pole vaulters reached the podium by placing third at the weekend’s Last Chance Invitational indoor track and field meet at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

Cullman’s Tally Wilson and Garrison Hill each touted the same spot on the girls and boys sides in Class 6A-7A, as did Fairview’s Alexus Lindsey in the 1A-5A girls division.

Holly Pond’s Matt Cahoon concluded the indoor pentathlon third for the 1A-5A boys. The junior was first in the high jump (6 feet, 4.75 inches) and shot put (46 feet, 3.5 inches). Cahoon bested the field by 3.5 inches in the former event and by more than 10 feet in the latter.

Other area athletes posting scoring results were Cullman’s Tanner Jackson, fifth in the 6A-7A boys shot put; Good Hope’s Christian Echols, fifth in the 1A-5A boys shot put; Holly Pond’s Dylan Morton, seventh in the 1A-5A boys long jump; and Holly Pond’s Tristan Priest, eighth in the 1A-5A boys shot put.

The state indoor track and field meet will be Friday and Saturday, again at the Birmingham CrossPlex.


College Basketball

Cody Jones was the man for Sewanee over the weekend, leading the NAIA Tigers in points in a pair of conference wins.

The former Holly Pond point guard and current college freshman piled on 21 points, three steals and three assists in a 68-64 victory at Oglethorpe (Ga.) on Friday and followed it up with 18 points on 5-of-7 3-point shooting in an 80-65 road triumph over Berry on Sunday.

Jones is second on the team in scoring with 11.2 points per game. Sewanee is 13-6 overall and second in the Southern Athletic Association at 6-2.
