HANCEVILLE — A First Source for Women mobile clinic will soon hit the streets across Cullman County after the City Council here voted to sell the agency an old EMS truck at a discount.
The non-profit pregnancy center, headquartered on Commercial Street in Hanceville, plans to purchase the vehicle for $5,000 to provide assistance to pregnant women and new mothers. In a 4-1 vote, the council agreed to surplus the old truck, valued at $10,000, and sell it to First Source at a discounted price. Councilman Charles Wilson cast the lone no vote.
“Since they’re based here in Hanceville, I think we should sell it to them,” said Mayor Kenneth Nail. “They can use it to go out into the communities and help more women.”
Former mayor Katie Whitley suggested First Source ask other towns and cities to donate towards purchasing a vehicle, rather than relying on Hanceville to sell it a city vehicle at a discount. The $5,000 will go back into the fire department budget, and firefighters had no problem selling it for less than it’s worth, Nail said.
“They just want to get rid of it,” he said. “We’ve been running medical calls with a smaller vehicle that’s still equipped with everything they need, and that has saved quite bit on fuel costs.”
First Source for Women provide free pregnancy tests and ultrasounds, free referrals to medical providers and agencies and counseling, classes and mentoring programs for new parents.

* Approved bills payable. Wilson asked Nail about a $14,800 bill from Blountsville Material for gravel and why he didn’t have the purchase approved by the council first. All purchases over $2,000 are supposed to receive council approval. Nail said the gravel was for the U.S. 31 ditch project, which the council had already approved, but Wilson insisted Nail should have had council approval for the invoice.

* Discussed the first quarter of the fiscal 2016 budget.
* Approved minutes from January 14 meeting.
