Cullman’s Fletcher Reeling dives for a loose ball being picked up by Holly Pond’s Matt Cahoon. The Bearcats and Broncos are set to meet Saturday.

All eyes will be on one of the area’s biggest rivalries as the only show in town on Saturday night.

Holly Pond will head to Cullman for a much-anticipated weekend matchup between programs that are awfully familiar with one another.

Junior varsity will kick off the four-game slate at 3 (girls) and 4:30 p.m. (boys), followed by the varsity at 6 (girls) and 7:30 p.m. (boys).

The Bearcats have won two straight against the Broncos on the boys side since dropping the season opener 93-79. Their 75-73 victory in the first rematch was for the Holly Pond Thanksgiving Tournament title, and their 73-58 triumph in the second was for fifth place in Cullman’s Mitch Smith Chevrolet Yule Tide Classic.

Holly Pond (18-5) tumbled from No. 1 in Class 3A to 10th in this week’s state rankings following a 21-point loss to Cold Springs at the county tourney and regular season area title-clinching win over eventual county-champion Hanceville.

Cullman (17-7), meanwhile, has been nominated for the 6A rankings since the holiday break. The ‘Cats are coming off a 50-47 home defeat to Decatur Thursday that forced a coin toss for 6A, Area 15’s second seed.

The Black and Gold were bested in Friday’s pointless flip. As the second and third seeds, Cullman and Decatur were already locked in as first-round foes for next month’s area tournament. Host Austin will open against No. 4 Hartselle.

Holly Pond’s girls topped the Lady Bearcats 70-60 in their only meeting back in November. The Broncos (16-9), who recently clinched their eighth consecutive regular season area title, are currently ninth in 3A. Cullman is seeking its fourth win and first since routing Brooks at the Yule Tide Classic late last month.
