This building at 500 Third St. in Niagara Falls has been the source of marching band music that played nightly for about the past six months.

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Residents and restaurant patrons in downtown Niagara Falls are being encouraged to “Fight, fight, fight for Iowa,” and no one is quite sure why.

Nearly every night for the past six months, the University of Iowa’s fight song has echoed through a vacant building in downtown Niagara Falls. The 50-second clip plays on a loop for approximately seven hours, from about 4 to 11 p.m., much to the irritation of business owners in the area.

A local restaurant, Wine on Third, sits next to the vacant building, which is also within earshot of the Niagara Gazette offices.

Shawn Weber, owner of Wine on Third, said he remains uncertain of why the music keeps playing. His customers, he said, have complained, as have some residential tenants above Wine on Third.

“I’m not sure what the purpose is or what the issue is,” Weber said.

Seth Piccirillo, the Niagara Falls Department of Community Development director, said he is “aware of the music, but we have not been involved” to this point.

According to local tax records, the building was purchased by Thunderfalls LLC in 2001 and is currently assessed at nearly $350,000.

Company representatives did not return calls from the Niagara Gazette seeking comment.
