PREP BASKETBALL: Broncos return to No. 1 in state rankings
Published 11:09 pm Wednesday, January 20, 2016
- Holly Pond's Drew Jones goes vertical for a rebound during Friday's county game against Fairview. Jones had 31 points as the Broncos clinched the top seed for next month's county tournament.
There’s no pick-me up like a spot at the top of the state basketball rankings.
Holly Pond’s boys might be without standout point guard Bailey Smith for the rest of the season, but they’ll settle for being the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s No. 1 team in Class 3A.
The Broncos (17-4) overtook Madison Academy (13-9) for the leading role and will finally get going at the 2016 Cullman County Basketball Tournament on Friday against Cold Springs (17-6) — which dropped a spot to second in 2A — after enjoying a first-round bye. They ended last winter at the top of 3A pecking order before being upset by then-No. 4 West Morgan in the sub-regional round.
Holly Pond and Cold Springs both opened this season at No. 2.
St. Bernard debuted at No. 9 in 1A and continued its ascent this week with a jump from seventh to fifth. The Saints have won 13 straight and are 17-1.
Cullman (17-5) was again nominated in 6A, as was Fairview (17-5) in 5A girls.
Cold Springs (15-10) and Holly Pond (15-8) each tumbled a position on the ladies side. The Eagles are seventh in 2A, while the Broncos are ninth in 3A.
