AHSAA reclassification: Locust Fork drops to 3A; Corner, Hayden and Mortimer Jordan in same 5A football region

The Alabama High School Athletic Association has completed its biennial reclassification of its member schools, and there are a handful of changes in store for area teams over the next two years.

Locust Fork, which for many years played in Class 3A before moving up to 4A in 2006, will return to 3A next year.

Corner will remain in 5A, and will be grouped in a seven-team football region with Hayden and Mortimer Jordan, getting out of its current region that mainly included teams in Birmingham. That should benefit the Yellow Jackets both on the field and at the ticket window, as city teams brought very few spectators along when they visited Corner.

The new Class 5A Region 6 includes Jordan, Corner, Hayden, Curry, Fairview, Springville and West Point.

All other local schools stay in their current classes. Fultondale remains in 3A, and will be in Region 6 for football along with Locust Fork, Hanceville, Holly Pond, J.B. Pennington, Susan Moore and Vinemont.

Gardendale and Pinson Valley remain in Class 6A Region 6, along with Carver, Center Point, Clay-Chalkville, Walker and Minor.

Among nearby schools, Dora drops back to 4A after two years in 5A, and Southeastern returns to 1A after two years in 2A. Tarrant stays in 2A, and will be in a football region with Cleveland. Oak Grove and Cordova stay in 4A, and Sumiton Christian will be in 1A.

Class 7A, which was added to the association’s previous six-class system two years ago as a place for very large schools, will remain at 32 teams. Classes 3A through 6A will have 59 teams each, and 1A and 2A will have 58 teams each.

The AHSAA Central Board also made a change in the way it figures enrollment for classification purposes. In the past, only students in grades 10 through 12 were counted, but now the AHSAA will also include ninth-grade students who were held back in the previous school year, since they may become eligible for play during the following year.

The announcements came at the Central Board’s meeting in Montgomery on Wednesday.
