From Hans Gruber to Severus Snape: Remembering Alan Rickman

His rich, grating voice made him the perfect man to play the bad guy. But even at his most wicked, it was hard not to love Alan Rickman.

Rickman, a classically-trained British actor, died at the age of 69 Thursday after a battle with cancer. His most noted roles included German terrorist Hans Gruber in 1988’s “Die Hard” and Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films.

Rickman nabbed just one major award in his career — a Golden Globe for the TV miniseries “Rasputin.” But there are so many unforgettable roles in his career, such as the Sheriff of Nottingham in “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” and the voice of Marvin in “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” that will live on with fans.
