Alabama’s 2015 holiday traffic deaths up over previous year

Traffic fatalities were more numerous across the state over the Christmas-New Year’s holiday period, according to numbers from the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency.
In a statement issued Monday, the ALEA reported 25 deaths throughout the state from midnight Dec. 18 to midnight on New Year’s Day. Of those killed, 15 were drivers, four were passengers in vehicles, five were pedestrians and one was on a motorcycle. Only four of the victims in cars or trucks were wearing seat belts.
The death total is six more than the total from the 2014 holiday period. Like this year, only four victims then were wearing seat belts out of the 16 in belt-equipped vehicles.
Secretary of Law Enforcement Spencer Collier said that budget cuts have caused ALEA state troopers to spend more time taking care of the after-effects of fatal crashes, instead of enforcing laws beforehand that might prevent them.
“As the new year progresses, troopers encourage everyone to make highway safety a priority — particularly when temperatures dip below freezing and ice may be present on roadways,” Collier said.
