Police in Oklahoma say a man climbed through a woman’s window, doused her with lighter fluid and then attempted to light the woman on fire after saying he loved her.
But Shawn Billy, 31 — charged with arson and possession of controlled dangerous substance — told officers from the McAlester, Oklahoma Police Department that the woman in question is on drugs and the assault never happened, according to a police affidavit.
Officer Charles Rogers said he and officer Brain Greer started their investigation when they were dispatched to the woman’s mother’s house Dec. 16.
“(The woman) stated that she was asleep at her house when Shawn Billy crawled through the window and laid on top of her,” Rogers wrote. “(The woman) stated that it woke her up and then Billy stated that he loved her but she was going to die.”
Rogers said the woman told him Billy poured lighter fluid on her then lit a blanket on fire.
“(The woman) stated that she slapped the flame out before it burned very much of the blanket,” Rogers wrote. “(She) stated that she got away from Billy then called her mother to come and get her.”
The woman said they called police when they got to the mother’s home.
Rogers and Greer said they investigated at the home on East Tyler Avenue and found a chair and charcoal lighter bottle against the house under an open window. The officers also took custody of a blanket from the scene, according to the police affidavit.
Rogers said Billy was found walking from the back yard of the house and was initially arrested on city warrants. Rogers said Billy said he did climb through the window because the door to the home was locked, but he denied any wrongdoing.
“Billy stated that (the woman) is doped up and crazy,” Rogers said. “Billy stated that he did not try to light her on fire.”
Billy was charged with two felonies Thursday. Bail was set at $50,000. He is due back in court on Dec. 31 and is still jailed at the Pittsburg County Justice Center.
