A sheriff’s spokesman said that the crash occurred Saturday night just after 11  p.m. at the intersection of Pinson Valley Parkway (Alabama 79) and Jefferson State Parkway, just south of the Pinson city limits and north of the Jefferson State Community College campus.

A Dodge van driven by Bewley was headed north on 79 when it collided with a Mitsubishi car that was coming out of Jefferson State Parkway and turning left onto 79.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office identified the victims as Diane McGlown, 47; Jakobe Johnson, 8; and Cardell Coachman, 8. All are from Birmingham. Their relationship to each other, or to the other passengers in the car, has not yet been established.

McGlown and Johnson were ejected from the car and died at the scene. Coachman died inside the car. The driver, a 39-year-old woman, and a 71-year-old female passenger were seriously injured and taken to a Birmingham hospital.

Bewley is currently being held in the Jefferson County Jail on $187,500 bond.
