- Destination Star Wars
Just about every kid wants to travel through space, but fans don’t have to go so far, far away to visit locations linked to the “Star Wars” saga.
Yuma Desert
Location: Southwestern United States
One of North America’s harshest deserts was used for filming of “Return of the Jedi.”
The scene when Luke and Han Solo almost die at the hands of Jabba the Hutt in the Great Pit of Carkoon sequence on the Dune Sea was filmed in the sand dunes of Buttercup Valley.
Reportedly, the cast and crew stayed in Yuma, Ariz.
The crew later returned to the Imperial Sand Dunes to film additional shots for a special edition of “A New Hope.”
Redwood National and State Parks
Location: Humboldt County, Calif.
The home of the Ewoks was filmed in the United States.
The forest moon of Endor was filmed in the Tall Trees Redwood Grove in the northern part of Humboldt County. Most of the filming was in private and public forests near Smith River, Calif.
Tunisia
Location: Throughout the country
This trip requires American fans to go a little further than most, but for some, it’s well worth the trip.
Parts of four “Star Wars” movies were filmed in Tunisia, and most of the sites are still viewable today, including Luke’s childhood home. You can visit the building used for the exterior in Chott El Jerid and the hotel used for the interior, The Hotel Sidi Driss, in Matmata.
Star Tours – The Adventures Continue
Locations: Anaheim, Calif.; Orlando, Fla.; Tokyo, Japan
“Star Tours” is a 3D motion simulator attraction that features multiple storylines and allows visitors to encounter characters such as R2-D2 and Darth Vader in various locations, including Naboo and the Death Star.
In August, Disney announced plans to open two “Star Wars” themed lands – each 14 acres – at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.
The parks will allow guests to ride the Millennium Falcon, engage in a “climactic battle,” visit the cantina and more.
Although dates for the grand openings haven’t been announced, construction at both parks for the “Star Wars” attractions is scheduled to begin in January 2016.
LEGO Star Wars Miniland
Location: Carlsbad, Calif.
LEGOLAND California Resort’s “Star Wars Miniland” allows visitors to retrace the major events in the franchise’s saga in a chronological path.
The attraction features more than 2,000 LEGO models, interactive buttons/animations and life-size LEGO models of popular characters such as Chewbacca, Yoda, R2-D2, Darth Maul and Darth Vader.
Rancho Obi-Wan
Location: Petaluma, Calif.
“Star Wars” fan and retired Lucasfilm head of fan relations Steve Sansweet owns so much memorabilia he could open a museum – so he did.
Located at a private residence in rural California, Rancho Obi-Wan offers tours of the world’s largest private “Star Wars” collection.
Sansweet’s collection features everything from action figures to screen-used props, as well as an arcade with classic games that visitors may play. A portion of the collection was even used in a commercial for Kraft’s limited “Star Wars” Macaroni and Cheese.
Tours usually last between two and four hours and are often sold out. To learn more, go to ranchoobiwan.org.
