PREP HOOPS: St. Bernard boys ranked for 1st time since 2000; Broncos, Eagles snag No. 2 nods

- Holly Pond's Bailey Smith drives the lane against Cold Springs' Cayde Elliott and Eli Hamby earlier this month. Both teams debuted at No. 2 in Wednesday's state rankings.
Holly Pond’s and Cold Springs’ boys debuted at No. 2 in their respective classifications when the Alabama Sports Writers Association released its first basketball rankings of the season late Wednesday night.
No shocker there.

But how about St. Bernard’s boys coming in at No. 10 in Class 1A?
Eh, not quite. At least not to anyone who’s been following the Saints’ tear to open the 2015-16 campaign.
Coach Greg Boatright’s squad is off to an 8-1 record. The sole loss was to a solid 2A Altamont team at a Thanksgiving tournament.
St. Bernard’s appearance in the rankings is the boys program’s first since holding down the eighth spot in January 2000. The Lady Saints were seventh that same week.
“We’re off to a good start, and we’ve got a solid bunch. But it’s early,” Boatright said. “This group, they’ve put the work in. They’re getting the reward right now.”
The only team in front of 3A Holly Pond (10-1) is Madison Academy (6-2). LaFayette (3-1) is all that’s standing in the way of Cold Springs (7-2) in 2A.
