LOCAL ROUNDUP: Wilson sets Cullman indoor pole vault record

Not a bad start for Tally Wilson’s indoor track and field career at Cullman.
Wilson, a senior transfer from Michigan, cleared the bar at 11 feet to take the Class 6A-7A girls pole vault title Saturday at the Magic City Invitational at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The high-flying display set a new indoor standard for the Lady Bearcats.
Cullman’s Austin Elrod and Fairview’s Antonio Taylor rounded out the local representatives to reach the podium. Both boys were second in their respective events, Elrod in the 6A-7A shot put and Taylor in the 1A-5A high jump. Taylor was also eighth in the long jump.
Other scoring results from Cullman belonged to Garrison Hill, fourth in boys pole vault; Savanna Canter, seventh in girls 60-meter hurdles; Walker Caretti, seventh in boys 400-meter dash; Caroline Hollingsworth, seventh in girls high jump; and Ann Carol Braswell, eighth in girls pole vault.
Fairview’s Alexus Lindsey was fifth in the girls 60-meter hurdles and sixth in the long jump.
JV Girls Basketball
Cold Springs 54, Holly Pond 32
The Lady Eagles drilled seven 3-pointers in the first quarter and 11 for the game to cruise past their county rival Friday night.
Kasey Johnson accounted for five of the treys and a game-high 19 points. Kinley Campbell added four 3’s and 13 points — all in the opening quarter.
Hannah Stricklin and Emily Williams scored eight and seven points, respectively, in the win.
Tess Duke, Kirsten Campbell and Lili Harris had seven points apiece for Holly Pond.
JV Boys Basketball
Holly Pond 60, Cold Springs 22
Tanner Duke (13 points) and Jake Harris (11) both reached double digits, and the Broncos rode a 30-4 lead after the first quarter to an easy home victory Friday night.
Holly Pond’s McKinley Garrett and Tyler Cone netted nine and seven points.
Mason Harris and Dylan Byrd both had five points for the Eagles.
College Basketball
Cody Jones was the ideal sixth man in Sewanee’s 60-57 triumph at Piedmont Saturday, coming off the bench for nine points, three steals, three rebounds and a pair of assists.
The Holly Pond product played 19 minutes for the NAIA Tigers, who have won four in a row and are off to a 5-1 start, their best since the 1997-98 season.
Jones is averaging eight points six games into his freshman campaign.
