Update: Second person dies from minivan-crash injuries; Fultondale truck driver killed in Talladega wreck

Two people died after a minivan filled mostly with family members crashed on Sun., Nov. 22 along Interstate 65.

Marvin Elmer Vogt Jr., 5, of Gulf Breeze, Florida died on Nov. 23 afternoon at Children’s of Alabama, after the family’s 2014 Chrysler Town and Country minivan left the roadway and struck a concrete barrier in the median.

Then on Nov. 25, Deanna Steinwagner, 26, of Baldwin, Ill. died from injuries she sustained in the crash.

Alabama State Troopers spokesman Chuck Daniel said the crash occurred about one mile south of Fultondale. The scene is in the construction zone around the new interchange with the future Interstate 22.

Five other passengers in the van were also hospitalized after the crash. Marvin Vogt Sr., 28, also of Gulf Breeze, and Nicolas Vogt, 27, were taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Zane Vogt, 8; Layla Vogt, 7; and Bentley Vogt, 2, were transported to Children’s of Alabama. Their conditions were not made public.

Meanwhile, a Fultondale man died in a truck crash near Talladega.

William Lee Taylor, 58, died Friday when his Freightliner tractor-trailer ran off Alabama Highway 21 north of Talladega.

Daniel said that the truck overturned, and Taylor was declared dead at the scene.

State troopers continue to investigate the crash.
