Child killed, six other passengers injured when minivan crashes on I-65 near Fultondale

A 5-year-old child has died after the minivan his family was riding in crashed Sunday on Interstate 65.

Marvin Elmer Vogt Jr. of Gulf Breeze, Florida died on Monday afternoon at Children’s of Alabama, after the family’s 2014 Chrysler Town and Country minivan left the roadway and struck a concrete barrier in the median.

Alabama State Troopers spokesman Chuck Daniel said the crash occurred Sunday at 6:45 a.m., about one mile south of Fultondale. The scene is in the construction zone around the new interchange with the future Interstate 22.

Six other passengers in the van were also hospitalized after the crash. Marvin Vogt Sr., 28, also of Gulf Breeze; Nicolas Vogt, 27; and Deanna Steinwagner, 27, were taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham. Zane Vogt, 8; Layla Vogt, 7; and Bentley Vogt, 2, were transported to Children’s. Their conditions were not made public.
