Class 5A football playoffs, second round: No. 8 Mortimer Jordan 30, No. 7 Wenonah 20

Mortimer Jordan running back Spencer Brown (28) works his way past a host of Wenonah defenders during the Blue Devils' 30-20 playoff win over the Dragons. Brown was chosen to the Alabama Sports Writers Association's Class 5A All-State first team as an all-around athlete, and teammate Jacob Dean was picked as a first-team linebacker. Devils' head coach Dusty Goode was named 5A coach of the year.

Not long ago, worldwide delivery giant UPS — famous for its ubiquitous chocolate-brown vehicles — used the slogan, “What can brown do for you?”

Mortimer Jordan might want to borrow that line now, after running back Spencer Brown proved to be quite adept at delivering a very important package at just the right time.

Brown two second-half scored touchdowns, one for 52 yards and another for four, and added the 2-point conversions on each as the eighth-ranked Blue Devils came back from a 6-point halftime deficit to defeat No. 7 Wenonah 30-20 Friday night in the second round of the AHSAA Class 5A playoffs.

The Devils started out well by cashing in on a long opening drive, taking 15 plays to go 66 yards. Quarterback Duncan Hodges had his troubles on the march, as he was sacked three times, but he finished off the possession with a 1-yard touchdown sneak with 3:34 left in the first quarter.

The Dragons responded quickly, scoring two touchdowns in a span of 39 seconds.

Quarterback Aubrey Robinson capitalized on good field position, when Jordan flubbed an onside kickoff attempt that handed the ball over to Wenonah at the Devils’ 43. Robinson immediately ran for 32 yards, and scored from the 8-yard line two plays later.

The Dragons then successfully executed an onside kick of their own, and scored three plays later on a 4-yard run by running back Tyler Thornton.

In the second period, Jordan tied the game at 14-14 when Hodges found wide receiver Noah Cardwell in front of the Devils’ bench; Cardwell then avoided going out of bounds as he sped down the sideline for a 36-yard score.

Taking advantage of good field position again, Wenonah took the lead back on a 2-yard Robinson touchdown run with 5:39 left in the first half; the scoring play was set up by a 35-yard dash by Thornton. The 2-point conversion failed after the Dragons were penalized twice.

That was all for Wenonah’s offense, as the Devils held them scoreless after intermission.

Jordan squelched a Dragon (10-1) threat following Brown’s long touchdown run in the third period, as JuJu Washington intercepted a Robinson pass in the end zone.

After Brown’s second score with 8:36 left in the game, Wenonah took the subsequent possession down to the Devils’ 4-yard line with first and goal to go, but were forced backwards thanks to a tackle for loss by Colby Moon, followed by consecutive sacks by Levi Faucett and Brown, the later on fourth down to stop the threat.

Hodges was 10-of-21 passing for 151 yards. Jacob Dean had four receptions, three on the opening drive, for 44 yards.

Brown finished with 121 yards for the night, including two touchdowns and three 2-point conversions.

The victory pushes Jordan (11-1) into a quarterfinal game next week at home against second-ranked and unbeaten Guntersville, who defeated Hayden 26-10 Friday.
