Father of Gardendale High football player killed in crash with Birmingham Police vehicle

The father of a Gardendale High School football player was killed in a crash Wednesday night that involved a Birmingham Police SUV.
Steven L. Tooson, 45, of Center Point died when his vehicle collided with the SUV, which was driven by a police officer responding to a call. The crash took place at 11:50 p.m. at the intersection of 11th Street North and Center Street. It is in the East Thomas neighborhood of Birmingham, two blocks north of Interstate 20/59, just west of its interchange with Interstate 65.
Tooson’s vehicle was traveling wast on 11th Court, and the SUV was headed south on Center Street.
Tooson and a female passenger were trapped inside their vehicle and had to be removed with rescue tools. Tooson was pronounced dead at the scene; the passenger and the police officer were both taken to UAB Hospital.
Cedric Tooson is a freshman on the Rockets football team, which is in the second week of its playoff run. Cedric has two sisters who are students at Bragg Middle School.
Their mother died last year, according to information on a fundraising page at the website GoFundMe.com. That page was set up by the Gardendale Athletic Club, which is trying to raise $5,000 to help Cedric Tooson and his sisters cover funeral expenses. As of 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon, $135 had been raised.
