Cullman Christian’s Jackson Holbrook (12) celebrates a defensive stop with teammate Jarett Anders early in Friday’s state championship triumph.

MILLBROOK — Perfection. Redemption. Jubilation.

Cullman Christian joyously soaked in all three Friday night after overwhelming Victory Baptist 54-6 to claim the six-man football state championship and pay back the Eagles for a shutout in last year’s title tilt.

Will Siegenthaler and Brett Perry ensured the outcome was never in doubt, hooking up for a 43-yard touchdown on the evening’s first offensive snap and combining for seven total scores.

Siegenthaler threw for 184 yards and four TDs, while Perry was named championship MVP for tacking on touchdowns in three different ways — the catch, a 45-yard punt return and a 28-yard pick-six — and snagging a pair of interceptions in a stout defensive effort by the entire squad.

The Lions not only capped off the campaign a perfect 10-0 but more than made up for last season’s 41-0 blanking in the same game and on the same field in the process.

“Oh, man, this is four years in the making,” Perry said. “I remember back when I was in ninth grade, ran the football five times in the season. We couldn’t go to the playoffs because it was our first year. Last year, we got blown out and this feels so sweet to return the favor.”

Luke Barlow had a hand in three touchdowns of his own. The first two came on respective receptions of 14 and 16 yards, with the third following an 8-yard run.

For a player who’d been pining for Cullman Christian to start up football since the sixth grade, there was no better way to go out. Especially considering the school was ineligible to compete in the playoffs its inaugural season, was eliminated in the semis in Year 2 and lost in the championship last fall.

“I’m speechless. I’m overjoyed. It’s amazing,” Barlow said. “I don’t want to say revenge, but it was the perfect way to end it because of last year.”

Siegenthaler’s other scoring strike was a 32-yarder to Jackson Holbrook shortly before halftime. Holbrook added another long catch early to finish the night with two for 61 total yards.

Staring at the lopsided scoreboard while his teammates celebrated around him, Siegenthaler could hardly believe his eyes.

“I thought we had a chance, but I honestly never would’ve said it’d be like this,” he said. “It was fantastic. I’m done with football and we went out on a high note, so I’m very happy.”

Jarett Anders shed his fair share of would-be tacklers and raced 27 yards into the end zone for the Lions’ final touchdown.

Barlow led Cullman Christian in rushing (52 yards on six carries) and receiving (80 yards on five catches). Perry and Anders contributed 44 and 41 yards apiece to the ground game.

The Lions had so many stars on defense it wasn’t even funny.

Perry was obviously the centerpiece with his two interceptions, but the impacts of guys like Greg LeBlanc, Barlow, Sam Vermillion, Anders, Siegenthaler, Holbrook and Cameron Hudson couldn’t be overstated. LeBlanc spent all evening in the backfield, and Vermillion was responsible for pressuring the quarterback on Perry’s pick-six.

Vermillion, who gutted out the game after a tough week health-wise, was also good for three extra points, which are worth two points a pop in six-man.

Victory Baptist (7-3) narrowly avoided the shutout with a touchdown with just less than 30 seconds to go.

Cullman Christian, which competes in the Christian Football Association through the Alabama Christian Education Association, racked up several individual accolades for their 2015 efforts during the postgame awards ceremony.

Barlow was recognized as the league’s defensive Player of the Year and at linebacker and running back. Perry doubled up as Friday’s MVP and as the top defensive back.

Other prize-winners for the Lions were Siegenthaler (quarterback), LeBlanc (offensive line), Anders (wide receiver) and Vermillion (offense at-large).

Of Cullman Christian’s 13 players, seven were seniors — Perry, Barlow, LeBlanc, Anders, Holbrook, Grant Wideman and Siegenthaler. Aaron Perry, Nolan Warner, Cameron Kretzschmar and Miles Warner round out those on the roster not previously mentioned.

Adam Cornelius served as fourth-year head coach Chase Cantrell’s assistant.

“It’s been a long-time coming,” Cantrell said. “This year going undefeated and being able to get them back for what they did to us, it’s just sweet. I’m just super proud of the guys. It has nothing to do with me. It’s just these guys who want to win for each other, not themselves.

“For four years, they’ve been together working hard for this goal. It’s just good to get one before they leave.”
