West Point’s fall is over. So is Kobe Smith’s high school career.

But not without the single-season Cullman County rushing record.

Smith collected 174 yards in the Warriors’ 41-21 first-round loss at Class 5A No. 10 Alexandria Thursday night, putting him eight yards over the previous county standard of 2,214 Ty Jones set at Vinemont in 2013.

To West Point coach Don Farley — and Smith — the record is a team accomplishment. From the offensive line to the scout team defense that prepared the talented tailback each week to the entire Maroon and White roster that rallied around Smith, it took them all to make 2,222 yards a reality.

Well, and Smith’s fleet feet, exceptional vision and unparalleled work ethic.

“I’m tickled to death for Kobe,” Farley said. “He definitely earned it. He’s one of those guys that was up there running stadiums when nobody else was around. In the weight room when nobody else was around. He put everything into every practice rep, every weight room rep.

“He always did everything full speed.”

Smith went off for 116 rushing yards in the fourth quarter alone. The strong closing stretch included touchdown runs of 27 and 41 yards, respectively.

West Point briefly enjoyed a 7-6 lead after Cameron Moore ran 92 yards on his third kickoff for a touchdown in as many weeks.

The Warriors entered halftime with only 35 yards of offense. Almost all of it came on a 28-yard carry by Smith with 6 seconds left on the clock.

Alexandria (9-1), which will play either Pleasant Grove or Madison County in the second round next week, received 192 rushing yards and five touchdowns from Jamal Tucker. Keenan Woodruff added 181 yards and a score, and Chase Smitherman secured a pair of interceptions.

The Valley Cubs, who led 20-7 at half, finished with 396 rushing yards. West Point picked up 127 of its 201 total yards in the fourth quarter.

The Warriors wrapped up the season 6-5. They were making their first back-to-back playoff appearances since 2004-05 after going from eliminated to the fourth seed when J.O. Johnson forfeited four region wins last week.

“Our kids played hard and did not quit,” Farley said. “I love this team, and the support we got from our fans has made this season be a lot of fun. I am proud of how far our kids came this year and how far we made it.”
