West Point’s week just keeps getting better.
With their playoff lives renewed a day earlier, the Warriors snapped a three-game losing streak with a pretty major upset Friday.
And it wasn’t even close, with the Maroon and White thrashing Class 4A No. 8 Priceville 49-21 in the regular season finale for both playoff-bound squads.
West Point, which returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and built an insurmountable lead by the third quarter, will take a 6-4 record into the first round next Friday at 5A No. 10 Alexandria (8-1).
Priceville dropped to 8-2 with its second straight loss.
The Warriors came within just three points of matching last year’s 52-21 blowout of the Bulldogs.
Stats were unavailable at presstime.
Winston County 40, Addison 12
Addison had no answer for Andrew Brown, who gained 347 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries for Winston County.
To start the game, the Yellow Jackets took over at their own 32-yard line and marched down to the Bulldogs’ 33. On four-and-13, Payton Taylor threw a strike over the middle to Brown, who ran in for a 33-yard touchdown. The extra point was no good, making it 6-0.
Jacob Brook fell on a fumble on Winston County’s next drive, but Addison wasn’t able to capitalize and turned the ball over on downs.
The Dawgs were forced to punt on the first play of the second quarter. Quinton Pagay took an option pitch for 32 yards to set up the Jackets in the red zone, and two plays later, Taylor ran in from eight yards out for another Winston County touchdown. Taylor connected with Andrew Kelley for the 2-point conversion and a 14-0 lead.
Winston County scored again on the ground to close out the half, this time via Brown from five yards out. The extra point gave the home team a 21-0 lead at half.
Brown broke free from midfield early in the second half and raced in for a 50-yard touchdown run to put the Yellow Jackets up 28-0.
Taylor ran 74 yards for a touchdown on the next drive, but a holding call on the Jackets called it back. The points went right back on the board however when Brown ran in from 65 yards out to go up 34-0.
As the third quarter expired, Addison was marching down the field in Yellow Jacket territory. Two penalties and a sack by Kevin Ward put the Bulldogs back near midfield. Noah Rice regained some of the lost yardage with a 19-yard run. On fourth-and-20, Bryant Ridgeway connected with Zeb Maze to put the Bulldogs on the board with a 24-yard touchdown pass. The 2-point conversion failed, leaving the score 34-6.
Addison recovered the ensuing onside kick at the Winston County 49-yard line. Eight plays later, Maze ran in from nine yards out for a Bulldog touchdown. Another failed 2-point left the score 34-12.
After an incomplete pass to start Winston County’s next drive, Brown sprinted for 58 yards and another touchdown for a final of 40-12.
Brown’s rushing yards Friday night gives him 2,300 and 28 rushing touchdowns on the year. He’s rushed for 637 yards and eight touchdowns over the last two weeks.
Addison’s leading rusher, Ben Robinson, gained 82 yards. Ridgeway completed 9 of 15 attempts for 74 yards and a touchdown.
The Bulldogs will take a 5-5 record into the first round of the Class 2A playoffs next Friday at undefeated and sixth-ranked Red Bay.
