FAYETTE — Mortimer Jordan got a scare in the first quarter, but came back after that and scored seven of the game’s last eight touchdowns — including four unanswered TDs in the second half — to score a 56-36 win over Fayette County on Thursday in the regular season finale for both teams.

The teams combined five touchdowns during a furious five-minute span in the latter half of the first period.

The Tigers scored twice in 14 seconds’ time, on a 1-yard run by Kondarius Wilson and a 13-yard run by Kerieq Sparks. Jordan answered a minute later when Walker McCleney ran 21 yards for a touchdown.

Fayette County came back for two more quick scores: a 1-yard charge by William Warren, followed by a 91-yard bomb from Drew Guy to Di’marious Wilson with a minute left in the quarter.

From that point on, though, the game belonged to the ninth-ranked Blue Devils.

Spencer Brown cut the deficit to six points with consecutive 1-yard touchdown runs by Spencer Brown. Colby Moon then put Jordan out in front with an 8-yard scoring dash with 1:50 left in the first half.

But the Tigers took the lead back before intermission, thanks to a Sparks touchdown run from the 11 with 44 seconds left. It was the last time Fayette County would score.

The Devils took the lead back for good with a 1-yard touchdown from Kalin Stringer. Jordan then tacked on scores from quarterback Duncan Hodges from the 1, then a Hodges pass to Jacob Dean for 29 yards, and finally a 4-yard touchdown run from Nick Mann.

The Devils depended more on their ground game, gaining 265 rushing yards against 56 for the Tigers, who gained 314 yards passing compared to 247 for Jordan.

The Devils also tallied a season-high 29 first downs, and kept intact their streak of scoring 40 or more points in each of their victories.

Fayette County (6-4) hosts DAR in the first playoff round next week. Mortimer Jordan (9-1) was originally scheduled to host J.O. Johnson in the first round, but the Jaguars forfeited four games on Thursday because of an ineligible player, bringing their season — and their football program, as the school will close at the end of the academic year — to an end. The Devils will instead welcome Lawrence County on Nov. 6.
