Fisher Willoughby scored the first two touchdowns of the matchup, and Christian Crandall secured the final three as Cold Springs defeated Tarrant 48-7 on Friday night.
The Eagles (6-3, 4-2 Class 2A, Region 6) will travel to Sulligent when the playoffs start in two weeks.
“We’ve only won two playoff games in school history, so getting to the playoffs is a big accomplishment for us,” Blue and Gold coach Rod Elliott said. “We’ll be excited when it gets here. My team is playing really well right now.”
Cold Springs scored on the opening drive of the game and forced a pair of turnovers on Tarrant’s first two possessions to break out to a 21-0 lead early in the first quarter. The Eagles led at halftime 34-7.
Before turning its focus to the postseason, Cold Springs will return home for a Thursday night showdown with county-rival Holly Pond.
North Jackson 42, Good Hope 15
The Chiefs scored three unanswered second-half touchdowns to break open a close game.
Good Hope (2-7, 1-6 4A, Region 7) took an 8-7 lead midway through the first quarter when Preston Bagwell hooked up with Matt Cofer for a 9-yard touchdown pass, and Lee Whisenant ran in the 2-point conversion.
North Jackson (6-3, 2-3 in 4A, Region 7) scored in the final minute of the first quarter to regain the lead and extended it to 21-8 on a 63-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
Good Hope responded with 57 seconds left in the half when Bagwell scored on a 1-yard run, but those were the final points of the game for the Raiders. The Cheifs scored twice in the third quarter and again in the fourth to seal the victory.
Good Hope won’t make the playoffs but will have plenty to play for in next week’s season finale when it takes on county-rival Hanceville.
Winfield 47, Holly Pond 6
Winfield quarterback Jordan Hunt passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another as the Pirates handed Holly Pond its 29th consecutive loss.
Hunt completed 6 of 8 passes for 123 yards, including a 69-yard touchdown to William Harrison and a 14-yarder to Dawson Cotton. Running back Drew Blackburn rushed for 141 yards on 13 carries and scored two rushing touchdowns. The Pirates led 41-0 at halftime.
Holly Pond only managed 143 yards of total offense, and 49 of those came on one play. Quarterback Michael Lambert connected with Dylan Morton late in the third quarter for the Broncos’ only touchdown of the night.
Holly Pond will wrap up its season next Thursday at Cold Springs.
Winston County 73, Vinemont 20
Vinemont fell behind 15-0 but scored twice in the final two minutes of the first quarter and trailed 15-14. Winston County broke the game open with four touchdowns in the second quarter.
The 73 points are the most given up by a Vinemont team in school history. The previous record was 69 during a game in 2003. No game statistics were available at presstime.
The Eagles (1-8, 1-5 in Class 3A, Region 5) finish the season next week with a road game against county-rival Fairview.
