PRATTVILLE — The last victory in Tabernacle Christian’s undefeated eight-man football season may have been its toughest.
But it was running back Josh Florence who came through in the end, catching a 65-yard screen pass for a touchdown with two minutes left as the Torches defeated East Memorial Christian 54-48 Thursday night at Prattville High School.
The job wasn’t done after Florence’s score, though. Tabernacle still had to hold off the Wildcats on their last possession, which they did by stopping them on fourth down at midfield.
“Another wild finish, and another spread offense that we had trouble covering,” Torches coach Keith Dabbs said.
The win gives Tabernacle a perfect 9-0 record, and 6-0 in Christian Football Association play.
Florence’s catch was part of yet another big game, in which he gained 246 yards and scored three touchdowns rushing plus two pass receptions for 85 yards. Coupled with his 625 yards rushing in last week’s win over Evangel Family, Florence has run for a whopping 871 yards in just two games.
Cobie Howard had three pass receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown for Tabernacle. Andrew Branham completed five passes in 14 attempts with two touchdowns, while Justin Box was 3-of-6 for 133 yards and one touchdown.
Nate Miller led the Torches’ defense with five tackles.
The win gives Tabernacle momentum going into next Friday’s CFA playoff semifinal, in which they will host visiting New Life Christian at Moncrief Park in Gardendale. The Torches will regain the services of starting quarterback Micah Miller, who broke his collar bone in the regular-season matchup with New Life.
