- Good Hope lifts up its hardware for winning the Class 4A, Area 10 Tournament on Tuesday night.
GOOD HOPE — The new floor fixture inside D.E. Ryan Gymnasium recognizing Rosemary Brown’s 38 years as Good Hope’s volleyball coach is already in need of some slight updating.
Correct when the decal was installed late Tuesday afternoon, her number of area championships no longer stood at 20 by the end of the evening.
Go ahead and make that 21.
The top-seeded Raiders tacked on the latest crown for their longtime leader by easily sweeping Locust Fork in the semis and surviving a contentious four-setter with Oneonta in the Class 4A, Area 10 Tournament title tilt.
In addition to the area crown, the state’s fourth-ranked squad secured a spot in the weekend’s North Super Regional in Huntsville. Good Hope, which improved to 51-6, will open against Area 15 runner-up Elkmont Friday at 6:45 p.m. at the Von Braun Center.
Two wins stand between the super regional field and a quartet of state berths.
The Raiders started the night off right with a quick 25-9, 25-2, 25-11 drubbing of Locust Fork. Chrissi Smith was unstoppable behind the stripe in the second set, closing it out with an impressive run of 23 straight serves.
The championship match proved to be a bit more difficult, with Good Hope taking the first set 25-18 and Oneonta pulling even with a 25-23 second. Brown’s squad eventually settled back into its winning ways, however, doing just enough to close out the victory 25-17, 25-16.
Kate Kent played the hero down the stretch in the final set, standing tall at the net and delivering seemingly every major point the Raiders needed to finish off the Redskins.
“That game was a biggie for us,” Brown said. “I was a little nervous. Right at the end, Kate found her game — and it was important at that point in time.”
Kaylee Maddox led Good Hope’s reliable trio of attackers with 23 kills and a pair of blocks in the deciding match. Kent was close behind with 20 kills and three blocks, as was Alyssa Harlan with 14 kills and a quartet of rejections.
Other contributors for the Raiders were Hannah Smith, 35 set assists, two kills and two blocks; Sadie Abbott, four kills; Chrissi Smith, 15 pass assists; and Ally Knight, two aces.
Maddox, Harlan, Hannah Smith and Angel Baker represented Good Hope on the All-Area Team.
Brown knows better than anyone how the road will only get harder from here. As the coach said she told her girls, “everybody’s good” at the super regional stage and beyond.
Harlan admitted the Raiders could probably still use some work communicating on the back row.
Nothing they can’t patch up with a little bit of practice, though, right?
“Totally,” Harlan and Maddox replied in unison.
5A, Area 14 Tournament
West Point extended its season and ended Fairview’s after downing the Aggies 25-14, 25-10, 25-17 at Lawrence County on Tuesday.
The second-seeded Warriors fell to the host Red Devils 25-14, 25-17, 25-13 in the championship match.
With the opening triumph, West Point qualified for Friday’s North Super Regional Tournament at Huntsville, where it’ll take on No. 8 Alexandria at 10:15 a.m.
Stats for the Warriors were unavailable.
6A, Area 15 Tournament
Cullman’s season came to an end on Tuesday following a loss to second-seeded Austin at Hartselle.
The Bearcats fell to the Black Bears 25-22, 25-18, 25-20 to finish the year 17-38 overall.
Tally Wilson led her squad with eight kills, seven blocks and three aces, while Taiya Ponder tossed in five kills, four digs and two blocks.
Anna Evans (three kills, one ace), Tiffani Schwaiger (three kills, one dig) and Grace Binkowsi (13 set assists, three digs, two kills and two aces) also contributed for the Black and Gold.
