Fultondale named D.P. Smith as chief of the city’s police department this week. Smith fills the void left by Byron Pigg’s retirement last year.

Smith retired from Birmingham Police Department nine years ago and joined the Fultondale Police Department soon after, working closely with Pigg until his retirement.

Smith will be sworn in officially on Oct. 26.
