Hanceville gained more than just a second win with last Friday’s 50-40 stunner over Oakman.

How’s the AHSAA Prep Spotlight and Player of the Week sound, too?

Both went to the Bulldogs Monday after an upset of Class 3A No. 6 Wildcats that featured a 40-minute weather delay and 43 first-half points from the home team.

Isaac Weissend got the party started with a 34-yard pick-six on the game’s first play from scrimmage, and Branen Hurst and Kaine Yates kept it going with a 78-yard pass-and-catch for a touchdown on Hanceville’s first offensive snap.

Hurst finished 10 of 15 for 284 passing yards and three TDs, including a 52-yarder to Weissend at the end of the first half. Toss in close to 50 rushing yards and an array of tackles, and it’s no surprise Hurst is this week’s choice for The Cullman Times Player of the Week, sponsored by Christian and Son Heating and Cooling.

The junior quarterback edged fellow Bulldog B.J. Smalls for the honor. Smalls sported touchdown runs of 72 and 70 yards and ended the evening with 211 yards on 15 carries.

Vinemont’s Garrett Boland and John Michael Dye accompanied Cullman’s Justin Patterson as the only other locals to garner mentions in the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s latest Prep Spotlight release.

Boland broke up two passes and picked off two others, the final to seal a 29-25 win against Holly Pond. The speedy signal-caller also totaled 125 yards of offense, including an impressive 30-yard touchdown jaunt.

Dye aided the Eagles’ first victory of the season with 154 rushing yards and three TDs — his last was the game-winner — on 25 carries.

Patterson, a regular on the AHSAA’s weekly list, contributed 11 tackles and a pair of sacks for minus-25 yards.
