- Kobe Smith, West Point — The Cullman Times Player of the Week, sponsored by Christian and Son Heating and Cooling.
The formula for picking the local Player of the Week is starting to become pretty darn easy.
Step 1: Find out what West Point’s Kobe Smith did.
Step 2: See if there’s anyone else who even came close.
This week, there definitely wasn’t — not in the area or even on the same field.
Despite the Warriors’ 42-21 region loss at J.O. Johnson, Smith was clearly the best player at Huntsville’s Milton Frank Stadium last Friday night. The fleet-footed tailback took off for 362 rushing yards and logged all three of West Point’s touchdowns to run away with The Cullman Times Player of the Week award sponsored by Christian and Son Heating and Cooling for the second time in the four weeks it’s been handed out.
Smith also made a legitimate case the Friday before with a six-touchdown performance against Hanceville. He waited just six days to top it, piling on 249 yards on three highlight reel carries alone — 83- and 96-yarders for TDs and a late 70-yarder that set up his final score.
Through six games, Smith, who had 222 yards on eight second-half rushes versus the Jaguars, is already up to 1,196 yards and 16 touchdowns.
And that’s just on the ground.
Smith capped off his accolades as a finalist for this week’s Alabama High School Athletic Association Prep Spotlight. He was joined in Monday’s release by Cold Springs’ Fisher Willoughby, Christian Crandall and Cayde Elliott, Cullman’s Zach Glenn and Justin Patterson, Holly Pond’s Michael Lambert and Dylan Morton, and Hanceville’s B.J. Smalls, who all earned mentions.
Willoughby did a little bit of everything in the Eagles’ 45-26 homecoming win over Addison. The junior caught seven passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns and recovered two fumbles, including a 50-yard scoop-and-score. Willoughby’s TD receptions covered 42 and 33 yards.
Crandall chipped in 120 rushing yards and two touchdowns (14 and 53 yards) and took a screen pass 55 yards for another score.
Willoughby’s and Crandall’s completions were zipped in by Elliott, who went 8 of 13 for 183 yards and a trio of TDs. The quarterback also ran in a short score to help Cold Springs top Addison for the first time since 1993.
Glenn picked off a pass that led to a touchdown and tallied 11 tackles in Cullman’s 20-7 region win at Athens. Patterson aided the defensive effort with 10 tackles and a pair of sacks.
Lambert completed 15 passes for 226 yards and four scores in Holly Pond’s 49-24 loss to Winston County. Three of his touchdowns were tossed to Morton, who turned 16-, 20- and 35-yarders into six points.
Smalls returned a kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown and added 86 rushing yards in Hanceville’s 49-35 loss at Winfield.
Smith and LaFayette’s Jatarvious Whitlow were edged for this week’s Prep Spotlight by Pike County’s defense.
Pike County blanked Barbour County 58-0 last Friday to secure its fifth shutout in as many games. No other team in the state has yet to allow a point. The Bulldogs are also scoring a Class 3A-best 54.2 points a game.
Whitlow sparked LaFayette’s 44-21 win over Woodland with five touchdowns scored three different ways. The quarterback returned punts 55 and 48 yards for touchdowns, had 176 rushing yards and two TDs on nine carries and was 6 of 12 for 124 passing yards and one last score.
