PREP FOOTBALL ROUNDUP: Hanceville hangs with Winfield; Broncos, Vinemont drop region bouts

Drew Blackburn and Jordan Hunt each rushed for two touchdowns and more than 100 yards Friday night to carry Winfield in a 49-35 win over Hanceville.

The Pirates (6-1, 4-0 in Class 3A, Region 5) gained 442 yards in the game and needed all of it to outlast the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-5 on the season and 1-2 in region play.

Blackburn ran 19 times for 125 yards, while Hunt rushed 10 times for 100 yards and completed 14 of 16 passes for 181 yards and one touchdown.

Hanceville quarterback Branen Hurst completed 13 of 23 passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns. Isaac Weissend caught four passes for 82 yards and a touchdown, and also threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Jose Orozco. B.J. Smalls rushed for 86 yards on 24 carries and scored on an 88-yard kickoff return.

The Pirates led 14-0 after the first quarter, scoring on an 80-yard punt return by Kyle Nixon and a 3-yard run by Blackburn. Weissend’s touchdown pass to Orozco — and Orozco’s point-after kick — cut the deficit to 14-7 with 7:11 left in the second quarter. Winfield struck back with 3:20 left in the half on a 7-yard run by Blackburn.

Kaine Yates caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Hurst with 1:44 left in the quarter to pull Hanceville within seven points, but Hunt completed a 32-yard touchdown pass to Dawson Cotton with 18 seconds left in the half to give the Pirates a 28-14 lead. Hunt added two touchdown runs early in the third quarter to increase the lead to 42-14.

Hanceville scored twice in the fourth quarter. Orozco caught his second touchdown pass — a 9-yarder from Hurst — with 4:59 left to play, and Weissend hauled in a 32-yard touchdown catch on the final play of the game.

The Bulldogs return home next week to host Oakman.


Winston County 49, Holly Pond 24

Gary Brown rushed for 306 yards on 25 carries and scored four touchdowns Friday night as the Yellow Jackets pulled away in the second half to defeat the Broncos.

Holly Pond (0-6, 0-3 in 3A, Region 5) took an early 6-0 lead when Michael Lambert completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Morton with 7:52 left in the first quarter.

Winston County (4-3, 2-2) scored three touchdowns in the final 5:44 of the first half to take a 23-6 halftime lead. Brown’s first touchdown came on a 3-yard run, and the 2-point conversion gave the Yellow Jackets an 8-6 lead. A fumble by the Broncos led to a 1-yard scoring run by Brown, and an interception allowed Brown to score on a 20-yard reception from quarterback Payton Brown with 25 seconds left in the half.

Quinton Pagay and Hunter Hodge each had rushing touchdowns for the Yellow Jackets in the third quarter before Taylor and Brown connected on a 17-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter. Taylor finished 7 of 15 passing for 142 yards and three touchdowns.

Lambert led the Broncos on offense, completing 15 of 36 passes for 226 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran the ball 15 times for 73 yards. Morton hauled in three touchdown receptions on passes of 16, 20 and 35 yards. Chris Richards scored the final points of the game on an 11-yard touchdown catch with 8:03 left in the fourth quarter.

Holly Pond will travel to Vinemont next week.


Oakman 35, Vinemont 0

The eighth-ranked Wildcats put together one of their most complete victories of the season to shut out the Eagles Friday night.

Oakman’s offense rolled up 427 yards of total offense, while the defense held the Eagles (0-6, 0-3 3A, Region 5) to just 58 yards and five first downs on the contest.

Garrett Martin ran for 107 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns to lead the Oakman offense. The Wildcats (5-1, 4-0) finished the game with 247 yards on the ground. The quarterback trio of Brayden Hall, Seth Key and JonDawson Tittle combined for 9-of-16 passing for 185 yards with a touchdown. Johnny Lyles was the top target with five catches for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Oakman recorded 11 tackles for loss and had four sacks on the evening.
