McCALLA — After getting hammered in a 65-10 loss to top-ranked Clay-Chalkville last week, Pinson Valley was expected by most outside observers to suffer a similar fate on the road at No. 4 McAdory on Friday.

But someone forgot to tell the Indians, who held the potent Yellow Jacket offense to just 21 points — all in the first half — and snatched away victory on a 20-yard field goal by Saul Rios in overtime for a 24-21 upset win.

The game was sent into extra time when Zeke Lawrence recovered a fumble by the Jackets in their own end zone for a touchdown with 8:30 left in the fourth quarter.

The Tribe had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a 20-yard chip-shot field goal attempt by Rios was blocked with 2:45 on the clock.

McAdory (4-1) took the lead on two touchdown passes by Jay Jones to Malcolm Askew with one right at the end of the first half. Jones also ran for a score.

Pinson scored on a pait of passes by Jackie Matthews in the first half as well. One of those was a 6-yard second-quarter slant pass to Errius Collins, who caught nine receptions for 119 yards on the night.

In the overtime period, McAdory got the ball first, but were set back when Jones was sacked for a big loss on third down. That forced a 35-yard field goal attempt that went wide, and left the door open for Rios to win the game in the Indians’ half of overtime.

Pinson’s Jay Woods also had an interception to halt a Jackets drive in the second quarter.

The Tribe (4-2) returns to Class 6A Region 6 action at home next week against Huffman.
