Football: Carver-Birmingham 39, Corner 20

Corner drew first blood, but visiting Carver scored 33 unanswered points as the Rams defeated the Yellow Jackets 39-20 in Class 5A Region 5 action Friday night.
After a 5-yard scoring run by Corner’s Drennen Hutchins five minutes into the game, sophomore quarterback Chappelle Wade had a hand in each of Carver’s first four touchdowns. He ran three yards for the first score, then threw a pair of long touchdown passes to Shawn Dubose — the first for 64 yards with 32 seconds left in the first quarter, and the second on a 28-yard toss halfway through the second period.

Wade struck again early in the second half on a 17-yard touchdown throw to Cameron McKinney. The streak of five straight touchdowns ended with Joshua Rice’s 38-yard run late in the third frame.
Corner’s Chase Goodwin scored early in the fourth on a 6-yard run, then again from eight yards away with 5:30 left in the game.
Wade threw his fourth touchdown pass of the game with 95 seconds remaining, this time on a 22-yard strike to Kenneth Miles.
The Rams dominated the offensive stats, gaining 446 yards compared to the home team’s 282. Carver’s lone fumble was the only turnover of the game for either team.
Wade was 8-of-18 in passing for 166 yards. Rice ran for 191 yards on 21 carries for the Rams, and Dubose gained 104 yards on four pass receptions.
Hutchins led the Jackets’ rushing game with 78 yards on 16 carries. Goodwin only ran the ball three times for 14 yards, but two of those runs were for touchdowns.

Trent Shedd had five solo tackles and four assists for Corner, while Hunter Averhart added four solos and nine assists.
The Jackets (1-2, 0-2 region) make the short trip down the road to take on a struggling Dora team on Friday night.
