- Mortimer Jordan tight end Levi Faucett (22) makes the catch while under pressure from Moody's Joseph Sciro (15) and Justin Cowans (32) in Jordan's 49-7 victory Friday.
The only real problems that seventh-ranked Mortimer Jordan had on Friday night was with the weather. Visiting Moody was less of an issue, though, as Jordan struck early and often to win by a 49-7 score.
It was a game in which the opening kickoff was moved up an hour to 6 p.m., but still was delayed for a half hour to start the second half because of lightning. It mattered little for the eventual outcome, as the homestanding Blue Devils had already inflicted most of their damage upon the guest Blue Devils before intermission.
Jordan quarterback Duncan Hodges — who would have a hand in three touchdowns before all was said and done — struck just 96 seconds after the opening kick, as he dashed 70 yards for a touchdown.
Four minutes later it was running back Kalin Stringer’s turn, as he ran in from the Moody 10 for a core, and also made the 2-point conversion.
Just 30 seconds after that, Jordan took advantage of a Moody miscue, and Spencer Brown scored from two yards away. The extra point was off the mark, but the hosts had tallied a 20-0 lead with 5:47 still to play in the first quarter.
Moody responded not long afterward with what turned out to be their only score of the night, as quarterback Christian Weems connected with Caleb Sciro on a 78-yard touchdown bomb.
Jordan answered back with three more scores before halftime. Spencer Brown got his second touchdown with a 1-yard run early in the second quarter. Then with just over two minutes before the break, Walker McCleney reached the end zone on a 7-yard run.
McCleney scored again with 51 seconds until halftime, as Hodges threw his lone touchdown pass of the night to him, this one for 39 yards to put Jordan ahead 42-0 at the end of the first half.
Hodhes would score his second rushing touchdown late in the third quarter, as he punched it in from the 1-yard line.
The home team’s rushing attack was dominant, as Jordan gained 33 yards compared to Moody’s 69.
Stringer and Hodges each ran for 131 yards, Stringer on 14 carries and Hodges on 13.
Both teams were fairly equal in the air, with Hodges completing 8-of-11 for 146 yards while Weems was 14-of-20 for 134. Levi Faucett led Jordan with three receptions for 40 yards; McCleney’s 39-yard touchdown catch was his lone reception.
Moody committed one fumble that was the only turnover for both teams.
Brown was the defensive leader for Jordan, with seven solo tackles, two assists and 1½ sacks. Nick Mann added five solos and two assists.
The victory keeps Jordan unbeaten in three games, scoring 43 points or more in each; in contrast, the defense has allowed a total of 32 points for the season. Moody suffered its first loss; they’ll play at Hayden next week.
Jordan travels to Odenville to take on St. Clair County in Week 4. The Saints are also unbeaten, having pulled off a 20-14 upset over highly-regarded Lincoln on Sept. 4, and manhandled Springville 42-8 on Friday.
