Football: Gardendale 34, Huffman 6

Gardendale rebounded from its season opening loss with a 34-6 thrashing of visiting Huffman, notching a victory in the first Region 6 game of the campaign.

Zac Cupps threw a pair of touchdown passes, one to Blake Zumbado for 54 yards in the first quarter and another to Peyton Erwin for 18 yards in the second.

De’Qua Houston scored on a 23-yard run early in the first period. Demetrius King also found the end zone on a 4-yard run just one minute after Houston’s score.

Seth Reburn kicked two field goals, one from 37 yards out and another from 31. He was also a perfect 4-for-4 on extra points.

Nyre Holden scored the Vikings’ lone touchdown with a 15-yard run as time expired.

Cupps was 8-for-24 for 146 yards passing with one interception. Zumbado only carried the ball twice, but led a balanced rushing attack with 77 yards. Houston gained 52 yards on seven carries.

The Rockets held the Vikings to just 98 yards of total offense, including just 38 yards on the ground in 31 rushing plays.

Gardendale (1-1, 1-0 region) travels to Pinson Valley next Friday night for the week’s North Jefferson News Big Game.
