Brookside police allege suspect tried to run over one of their officers

Willie James Stewart, 45, of Birmingham, was arrested by Brookside police Friday evening after he allegedly attempted to run over a police officer who was crossing the street. The police department said he accelerated rapidly toward the officer without provocation. The officer sustained minor injuries.

Deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office joined Brookside police in a pursuit of Stewart, during which they said he allegedly tossed drugs and other items from the vehicle.

Brookside police said Stewart had a lengthy criminal history that included being a registered sex offender. He is currently in the Jefferson County Jail on charges of reckless endangerment, driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana, attempting to elude, second-degree assault on a police officer and other crimes.

Stewart is being held on a $15,000 bond.
