The Danville Hawks capitalized on turnovers and survived a fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Cold Springs Eagles 21-20.
The loss snapped a six-game win streak for Cold Springs over Danville and ended the Eagles’ chances of starting the season 2-0 for the third consecutive year, which would’ve been a first in program history.
Danville led 14-7 at halftime and scored after a Cold Springs turnover early in the third quarter to take a 21-7 advantage.
Cold Springs cut the deficit in half early in the fourth quarter and scored the potential game-tying touchdown with less than four minutes to play but missed the extra point.
The Eagles had one last chance in the final two minutes, driving to the Danville 22-yard line before missing a field-goal attempt wide right with less than 30 seconds left.
Cold Springs coach Rod Elliot said poor execution and turnovers put the Eagles in a difficult situation.
“Down 21-7 in the fourth quarter, they played unbelievably well,” Elliot said. “They showed a lot of guts and determination. That’s the kind of effort we want to see out of our kids all the time for four quarters. But for whatever reason, we didn’t play well in the second and third quarter and got in a hole.”
Cold Springs opens region play on the road next week at Southeastern.
Brindlee Mountain 25, Holly Pond 18
Holly Pond was on the verge of snapping its 20-game losing streak Friday night at home but ultimately came up just short.
Brindlee Mountain scored the final three touchdowns of the game to overcome an 18-6 deficit.
The Broncos finished with more total yards (404-299) than the Lions, but couldn’t put away the home team. Holly Pond led 18-6 after a 41-yard touchdown run by quarterback Michael Lambert on the opening drive of the third quarter. Brindlee Mountain cut into the lead with a 4-yard touchdown run by Brent Myers. The Lions took the lead 19-18 in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard scoring run by Jerrico Everhart and sealed the comeback on Joseph Smith’s 19-yard touchdown run.
“We did a lot of good things. We just didn’t do enough to finish it off,” said Broncos coach Mike Bates. “That’s the hardest we’ve played since I’ve been here. We ran the ball really well. Our offensive line played really well — as good as they played in a long time. We were doing a lot of good things. We just ran out of gas.”
Holly Pond took a 6-0 lead when Caleb Jones completed a halfback pass to Christopher Richards for an 88-yard touchdown. The lead grew to 12-0 in the second quarter when Lambert connected with Dylan Morton for a 16-yard touchdown pass.
The Lions got a 41-yard touchdown run from Joseph Smith, cutting the deficit to 12-6 at halftime, only to watch Lambert score on his own 41-yard run to start the third quarter.
Lambert led Holly Pond with 100 yards rushing on seven carries, while Jones gained 80 yards on 10 carries.
“We play a lot of people both ways,” Bates said. “We’re not very deep in spots, but when those guys are hitting on all cylinders we were impressive at times.”
Holly Pond will return home next week and begin its region schedule against Class 3A No. 9 Oakman.
