Christopher Ray Tompkins, 36, of Cullman County, has been identified as the person killed in a shootout Sunday involving Arab police.

The man killed in a shootout with Arab police Sunday had multiple criminal convictions dating back more than a decade.

Christopher Ray Tompkins, 36, was living near the Marshall County border in an area that is under the Arab Police Department’s jurisdiction. He died from several gunshot wounds, Cullman County Coroner Jeremy Kilpatrick said.

His convictions include: 2013, theft of property; 2012, three counts of burglary and two counts of theft of property; 2010, criminal trespass and domestic violence; 2004, second-degree assault, breaking and entering a vehicle and drug possession, according to court records reported by Al.Com.

Tompkins was pronounced dead at the scene, Kilpatrick said. The coroner also said the body was at a state forensics lab in Huntsville.

A statement issued by the Arab Police Department Monday afternoon describes the incident as a pursuit of a stolen vehicle that ended in a shootout. At 6 p.m. Sunday, Guntersville Police Department pursued a stolen vehicle into Arab’s jurisdiction. Arab police then joined in the pursuit on Cullman County Road 1861. The pursuit continued to CR-1825 where two suspects got out of the stolen vehicle and fled on foot, according to Arab police.

Arab and Guntersville officers and Marshall County Sheriff’s deputies chased after the two and found the male and female suspects near a set of poultry houses off of CR-1825.

According to Arab police, an altercation ensued, and Warren was shot and the male suspect was fatally wounded. Warren was flown to Huntsville Hospital where he was treated and later released.

Marshall County Sheriff’s Office has charged the female suspect, Sissy Amanda Vaughn, with first-degree theft of property.

Arab police said the delay of releasing details about Sunday’s shooting was due to the number of agencies involved. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) continues to investigate the incident.
