Thunderstorms and rain will persist through much of the week as a combination of Gulf moisture and multiple upper level disturbances push north over the Tennessee Valley.
According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, numerous waves of showers with some embedded thunderstorms will continue to move northward across much of the area today and tonight. Rainfall may be heavy at times, which could create gusty outflow winds and localized flooding of low lying areas.
Local law enforcement reported no major traffic issues Tuesday, but many roads have standing water so authorities urged drivers to slow down. According to the NWS, 4.38 inches of rain has fallen at Cullman Regional Airport since 12 a.m. today.
The high temperature today should reach around 83 degrees with the chance of precipitation at 70 percent. The low tonight will be around 71, with thunderstorms expected after 8 p.m.
Looking ahead, the weather service said numerous showers and thunderstorms remain in the forecast past mid-week as Gulf moisture and multiple upper level disturbances push north. The weather will produce locally heavy rainfall and minor flooding of low-lying areas and other flood-prone locations.
Wednesday and Thursday will see the greatest threat for flooding when soil moisture will be at its highest, according to the weather service. Other potential threats include gusty winds and occasional cloud-to-ground lightning, mainly toward the end of the work week when a cold front approaches the area from the northwest.
