PREP FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: Warriors offer stadium to Aggies for preseason jamboree

With Dafford Smith Stadium condemned for the foreseeable future, Fairview will again have to play its home games at Cullman's Oliver Woodard Stadium. With that venue already occupied on Friday, West Point has opened its stadium to the Aggies for their preseason jamboree.

Fairview is receiving a helping hand from a county rival to solve its scheduling conflict for this week’s jamboree.

With Dafford Smith Stadium condemned for the foreseeable future and their second “home” at Cullman High already being used by the Bearcats this Friday, the Aggies have had to scramble to find a place to host J.B. Pennington for a preseason exhibition.

Fortunately for the Purple and Gold, West Point came to the rescue, opening up Warrior Field to the fellow Class 5A program it last played in 2013.

The current plan is for the Warriors to welcome in Curry Thursday at 7 p.m. and Fairview to face J.B. Pennington at the same time on Friday. If rain washes out Thursday’s action, however, the Aggies and West Point would play back-to-back Friday starting at 5:30 p.m.

Worst-case scenario would see storms cancel both jamborees on Friday.

West Point’s Thursday, Oct. 1 road tilt versus J.O. Johnson at Milton Frank Stadium in Huntsville has been selected as a Raycom Game of the Week.

The region bout will be televised on WAFF-48 in Huntsville, FOX6 in Birmingham and a trio of other stations around the state. It will also be carried online by the aforementioned outlets.

The TV appearance will be the Warriors’ third in four seasons. They faced Russellville in primetime in 2012 and Cullman in a lightning-delayed doozy the following year. Both were losses.
