Kimberly residents have had problems with backed-up traffic when local schools end classes each day, but a change in one school’s schedule might bring those problems to an end.
Bryan Elementary will dismiss classes at 2:45 p.m., starting today (Wednesday), according to a Facebook message by the schools Parent-Teacher Association. The move was made at the request of the Kimberly Police Department.
The earlier dismissal is intended to get traffic in and out of the school area before nearby North Jefferson Middle School also sends students home at 3 p.m.
Since the new school year began last week, traffic jams around Bryan have been a regular occurrence. Police Chief Bill Isbell told the Kimberly City Council on Monday that he counted more than 60 cars waiting in line to pick up children last week, and the situation became worse when North Jefferson dismissed their students.
Jefferson County Board of Education President Dean Taylor, whose son attends Bryan, expressed his support for the change on his own Facebook page. “It was smooth sailing this morning, we were in and out,” he said.
