Weather: Scattered storms return. Mostly sunny and hot with a 30 percent chance of scattered showers and storms this afternoon, with highs in the middle 90s. Rain chances continue tonight with lows in the middle 70s. Storm chances increase to 60 percent on Thursday with highs in the lower 90s and lows in the middle 70s.
Ebola scare in Birmingham. Nine people, most of them first responders, are under quarantine and/or observation after a patient was admitted to UAB Hospital showing signs similar to Ebola on Tuesday night. Officials with the Jefferson County Health Department said the patient has recently been to a part of Africa where the disease is still spread, but added that the chance the patient has the disease is small. Nevertheless, paramedics and others who came in contact with the patient were watched overnight for signs they may have contracted symptoms as well.
Arrests in killing of Trafford girl. In a crime that Jefferson County Sheriff’s officials have described in horrific terms, the mother of 3-year-old Jettie Ray Adams, along with her boyfriend, have been jailed on charges of aggravated assault. Misty Lynn Wright, 23, and Johnathon Wayne Talley, 39, were arrested late Monday night, and are expected to have to those charges upgraded to capital murder soon. The youngster was found Monday morning, unresponsive on a mattress on the porch of a trailer on Gurley Lane; she died later at UAB Hospital.
Sports: Props to the Rockets. The Alabama Sports Writers Association has published its pre-season high school football rankings released late last night, and Gardendale has claimed a spot in the poll. The Rockets were picked 10th in Class 6A to start the season, the first time they have been in the pre-season poll in a dozen years. Mortimer Jordan, Locust Fork and Fultondale also received votes from sports reporters, bt not enough to get into the top 10 in their respective classes.
