A data entertainment website has named Cullman among the Top 10 “Most Redneck Cities” in Alabama, though most commenters seem to disagree about the criteria.
The website Road Snacks compiled the list. Cullman ranked No. 4, behind No. 1 Dothan, No. 2 Haleyville, and No. 3 Albertville. The rest of the Top 10 includes No. 5 Russellville, No. 6 Florence, No. 7 Clanton, No. 8 Moulton, No. 9 Boaz, and No. 10 Wetumpka.
The description of Cullman is mostly complimentary, and focuses on fishing at Smith Lake and the amount of tobacco shops in the city:
“If you’re driving north-south on I-65, you’ll come to the little town of Cullman. Boy do they have some great fishing here. Lake Catoma has great largemouth bass and crappie, and nearby Lewis Smith Lake (rednecks call it Smith Lake) has some of the world’s best spotted bass,” the description notes. “In fact, they caught a 32-pounder here once. Rednecks can also get their smoke on, as there are almost more cigarettes and chew per person in the Cullman area than anywhere else in Alabama.”
Road Snacks developed the ranking by totaling the number of dive bars per city (Cullman has none), the number of tobacco stores per city (Cullman has several), the number of guns and ammo stores per city (Cullman has several), and the number of Walmarts per capita (Cullman has one, with another on the way).
Most of the online commenters on the piece have questioned the credibility of the data and the strange criteria used, with many commenters recommending some city’s (Jasper, Somerville, etc.) they think should’ve made the cut, instead.
