When another motorist approached the stopped vehicle to see what was wrong, the driver woke up and tried to speed away. In doing so, her car hit one or more other vehicles, veered off Walker Chapel Road and went down an embankment, running into Hankins and pinning her against a gas pump.

Hankins, 44 and a Mt. Olive resident, was taken to UAB Hospital, where she was declared dead at 11:14 a.m. The driver, who has not been publicly identified, was also taken to the hospital with injuries described as not life threatening.
