Another summer weekend is upon us, and that brings another round of delays and closures on Interstate 65 through the construction zone just south of Fultondale.

Starting Friday at 7 p.m., the Alabama Department of Transportation says that work crews will begin operations in both the northbound and southbound directions that will result in traffic backups at times through the area around the new Interstate 22 interchange.

Going southbound toward downtown Birmingham, crews will interrupt traffic between Walker Chapel Road and Daniel Payne Drive, as they move traffic lanes to a temporary configuration over section of new pavement. This work will allow crews to install new pavement in places that are currently in use for travel.

“This is a very demanding operation where activities will involve multiple lane closures and several traffic paces,” an ALDOT spokesperson said in a press statement.

The southbound operation is scheduled to wrap up by 5 a.m. Saturday morning.

On the northbound side, ALDOT plans lane closures throughout the weekend from Finley Blvd. to Walker Chapel Road. These closures are also for paving work through the I-22 zone.

The northbound work is scheduled to be finished by 5 a.m. Monday morning.

All of this is part of the massive project to finish the last Alabama leg of I-22, which will eventually connect Birmingham with Memphis.
