Alan J. Hruby shocked the small, sleepy town of Duncan, Oklahoma late last year when, according to police, he shot and killed his parents and younger sister in their home.

The 20-year-old former University of Oklahoma student has since confessed to the crime and is awaiting trial, in which prosecutors will be seeking the death penalty. He is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of his sister and parents.

Seven months after killing his family, Hruby says he deserves the to be put to death in a letter he wrote to The Oklahoman.

“I 100% welcome the death penelty [sic]!,” Hruby wrote. “What occured [sic] is so horrible it is deserved. It is so unspeakable.”

Hruby responded to a letter from the newspaper asking him several questions about the crime and his frame of mind. In a handwritten letter filled with misspelled words, he shared that he is still trying to understand what made him turn on his family.

It had been reported that Hruby needed money to fund his shopping habits. Even though that’s what he initially told authorities after he was arrested, he now says that’s incorrect.

“This didn’t happen because of shopping,” Hruby wrote “My shopping wasn’t something I or my parents could not pay. They just thought my spending was out of control, and it was.”

The letter, which was dated June 29, didn’t make Hruby’s court-appointed defense lawyer happy. Mitch Solomon told The Oklahoman that “Obviously I can’t make a comment as a result of the gag order that is in effect.”

Hruby is currently locked up at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester, Oklahoma serving three years in prison for credit card fraud after stealing his grandmother’s credit card and racking up almost $5,000 in charges during an overseas vacation.

While he has been imprisoned, Hruby has had time to go through what led him to massacre his seemingly unsuspecting family.

“Tears have all been REAL! I lost my entire family at once!!! How could they not be real,” Hruby wrote. “Not taking a shot at you. It’s just hard to hear that somehow I am faking all of this…

“I didn’t feel like myself that day. This was not something that seemed like a conceivable option. Why? I’m still trying to work it out. Trying to figure all of this out.”
