Bear rules

If you should come upon a bear, ODWC recommends the following:

• Do not be frightened.

• Do not approach.

• Do not run from the bear but back away slowly.

• Stand tall and upright and make loud noises.

• Avoid direct eye contact.

• Give the bear a direction to escape.

• Never feed bears.

ODWC officials released the following information and suggestions concerning human interaction with bears:

“If you see a black bear, the best course of action is to leave it alone. Black bears are shy animals that will avoid human interaction. To avoid contact, secure uneaten pet food, trash bins, bird and other wildlife feeders, as they can attract bears.”
