The Warrior City Council discussed plans for upcoming events Monday night, including groundbreaking for the new storm shelter and a dinner hosted by the Library Foundation.
Groundbreaking for the city’s second storm shelter will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 19. Refreshments will be provided, and the city council will be present.
The city’s first storm shelter was completed earlier this year. The second one will be much larger, with a capacity for 350 people, and double as a second community center. It will be located next to the old armory, the site of the future regional library.
On July 11, the North Jefferson Library Foundation will host a dinner at the armory as phase two of renovations beginning to convert the building to the regional library facility. Phase one of the project was to replace the metal front of the building with glass, while phase two will be the installation of heating and air systems to maintain a proper climate for book storage.
In addition to the dinner, live music and fireworks will be provided.
The event will be attended by state Rep. Allen Treadaway as well as Senator Jeff Sessions and 6th District Rep. Gary Palmer.
The council discussed the possibility of organizing a city-wide clean up day, with a possible date to be determined at the next council meeting.
Other business conducted by the council included:
• Two stop signs were stolen on Caldwell Drive and had to be replaced by the street department.
• The possibility of a 2-3 percent raise for city employees
• Raising a flag pole at the Community Center, which will be funded by the gas company.
A special work session will be held on Thursday, July 18 at 5:00. Among the agenda items will be the implementation of an emergency alert system.
The Council meeting to be held on Monday, July 6 will be moved to Tuesday, July 7, due to the Fourth of July. The meeting will otherwise begin at its regular time of 5:30, with the pre-meeting session beginning at 5:00.
