Authorities in Michigan say a man is facing child abuse and torture charges after he was accused of putting a 21-month-old boy in a clothes dryer and turning it on.
A $500,000 bond was set Monday for Dustin Boyd Holdaway, 33. He faces two felony charges, first-degree child abuse and torture, that carry maximum sentences of life in prison.
According to court documents obtained by the Traverse City Record-Eagle, marks on the boy’s skin matched holes inside a clothes dryer found in Holdaway’s home. Holdaway is suspected of burning the child, who was taken to DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids for treatment.
The boy and his mother spent the night at Holdaway’s home in March. Court documents state the woman checked on her son after she awoke to him crying. His face was bloody, and his skin peeled away when she attempted to clean him. She saw his body was bruised and burned and immediately took him to Munson Medical Center. He was then taken to Grand Rapids.
The boy’s mother told authorities that Holdaway once “jokingly told her that he put (her son) in the dryer and turned it on,” according to the documents.
The child is currently in foster care and has significant scarring with burns over 25 percent of his body, said Grand Traverse County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Noelle Moeggenberg.
“He is doing much better,” Moeggenberg said.
Michigan State Police have also requested charges against the boy’s mother, but Moeggenberg said no decision has been made in that matter yet.
