Pinson Valley’s baseball season started poorly, but ended very well in the AHSAA Class 6A state semifinals.

That feat earned coach Shane Chappell the top honor in the class — Coach of the Year, as chosen by the Alabama Sports Writers Association.

But Chappell wasn’t the only local to win major honors form the ASWA. Over at Corner (Chappell’s alma mater, where his brother Jeremy coaches softball), Jackson Tavel was named Pitcher of the Year for Class 5A. Tavel, who just finished his junior year, has already verbally committed to play college baseball at Ole Miss.

Tavel was one of several local players recognized in the ASWA All-State Team awards. Gardendale’s John Michael Mathews was named to the first team, selected as a designated hitter.

Two Indians were picked for the 6A second team, Jody Graves as a DH and Hunter Davidson as a utility player.

In Class 5A, first baseman Kevin Bryant of the Yellow Jackets joined Tavel on the first team. Three Mortimer Jordan players were tabbed for the second team: pitcher Hunter Cornelius, outfielder Walker MCleney and utility player Taylor Goodwin.
