Whether it snuck up on you, you saw a tweet or your calendar’s been marked for months, the first Friday in June is known as National Doughnut Day. With its origin dating back to at least the 19th Century, the doughnut in its truest form has quite a lineage and some serious staying power, ultimately finding its way into the hearts – and mouths of mainstream America during the 1920s and 1930s.
Since then, be it iced, jelly-filled, sprinkled or simply glazed, this coveted culinary delight has evolved to include a variety of toppings and ingredients while still helping to satisfy our craving for something sweet…and even gluten-free.

So in honor of National Doughnut Day, here’s our top five unique doughnut picks, courtesy of the blogosphere. And in the case you don’t get a chance to snag a free one near you, you can always try a few of these at home in celebration.
1. Baked Banana Donuts with Nutella Glaze – A creative take on the cake doughnut, this pick couples the fresh flavor of banana with the all-too-addictive taste of Nutella. Think of your grandmother’s homemade banana bread slathered in delicious hazelnut goodness.
2. Southern Buttermilk Bourbon Praline Doughnuts – Often when you think of the south, you immediately think of comfort foods. Pairing praline with doughnuts is a match made south of the Mason-Dixon Line. Who wouldn’t want a sweet taste of the South with each bite?
3. Peanut Butter & Jelly Doughnut – This jelly-filled pick is for the kid in all of us. Channeling the nostalgia of childhood, this is one PB&J you don’t have to worry about cutting the crusts off of. Paired with a tall glass of milk, you’re bound to feel like you’re five again.
4. Baked-and-Better Chocolate Protein Donut – Luckily, eating healthy these days doesn’t have to mean sacrificing our favorite baked goodies. Thanks to The Fit Fork, chocoholics everywhere can rejoice and enjoy a doughnut that’s packed with just as much protein as it is with chocolaty flavor. Tip: If you consider it fuel for your workout, you won’t have to consider it your “cheat meal” for the day.
5. Baked Funfetti Donuts – Finally, a colorful, truly kid-friendly treat for the stomach and the eyes. Packed with sprinkles, this “fun” spin on funfetti cake brings a little creativity to the typical doughnut. It’s almost like a fusion of art and food, which is definitely a tasty, good thing.
