Lawmen continue to look for two men they believe beat up and robbed a former football coach and assistant principal at Mortimer Jordan High School.

Steve Mosley, 59, of Morris, was attacked by two men on Friday and had his SUV stolen by his assailants, according to the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident apparently stemmed from efforts by Mosley to sell the truck. First reports indicated that he posted an ad on the Craigslist website, but investigators later determined that Mosley had simply parked the 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe in Morris with a “For Sale” sign posted on it.

A man reportedly met with Mosley to look at the SUV at about 9 p.m. Friday, and they took a test drive northward on Interstate 65. They got off at the Alabama Highway 91/Hanceville exit in Cullman County. It was there where the man posing as a prospective buyer met with another man. Both of them apparently beat Mosley severely, leaving him in critical condition; they then took the SUV.

Mosley was found stumbling around the 1100 block of Highway 91, and was transported to a Birmingham hospital. He remains there in stable condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

The two suspects are described only as white males of average size, and are believed to be from Jefferson County.

The Cullman County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case as a robbery, and officials are actively collaborating with the Morris Police Department.

“With it being an ongoing investigation, we’re limited with the information we can provide right now,” Sheriff Matt Gentry said. “But, we do have leads we are following up on.”

A spokeswoman for Jefferson County Schools said Mosley graduated from Mortimer Jordan in 1975, then returned after college and was hired as a teacher there in 1979 and became head football coach for the 1984 season. Among his players was Blue Devils star quarterback Peter Tom Willis, who went on to fame at Florida State plus stints with the NFL’s Chicago Bears and in arena football.

He later taught science at MJHS, and in February 1996 was named as an assistant principal, serving alongside then-principal Jimmie Trotter.

Mosley was transferred to North Jefferson Middle School to start the 2004-05 school year, and retired in February 2005.

“Basically, except for his time at North Jefferson, he never left Jordan,” said current MJHS principal Craig Kanaday, a close friend of Mosley.
